Maintaining a household has never been more difficult considering the escalating costs of many utilities. Not only do you have to worry about the food you need to serve everyday but you also have to plan a strategy to pay for the household utilities consumed by your family. Chief amongst these are utilities such as electricity, gas and water.

Now, if your household is not a million miles away from the norm, your kids are no doubt contributing in a pretty major way to your utility bills. Most of their toys and other means of entertainment seem to involve the use of electricity in order for them to function. Given these facts, it makes sense, if you seriously want to reduce your household energy consumption, to get the kids onside to help you do it.

Most kids seem to spend much more time than is good for them playing video games these days. I bet your household has at least one video games console and probably also a personal computer that your children play games on. One of the things you can do to help cut back on your household energy consumption is to keep control of when your kids are allowed to play their computer games. Don't let them play whenever they feel like it, impose some set hours. Don't forget that if they use a games console it will probably also need the TV to be on too - using a double dose of electricity.

Give strict and clear guidelines to your children concerning acceptable useage of computer games. It is a good idea to limit them to two hours game playing a day during the week and, say, four hours during the weekend. Don't forget to make sure your kids do their homework first before allowing them to use their games consoles and play their computer games.

Something else to bear in mind that a lot of people seem to forget is that electronic gadgets on standby still consume electricity. Knowing this, encourage your children to unplug and pack away their electronic equipment after they've finished using it. The extra bonus you get with this one is instilling the virtues of tidyness in your kids.

Another household resource you should take proper care to conserve is water. Kids usually enjoy playing in water immensely but you should limit their use of the bath and shower. A smaller, child-size bath is a much better, water-conserving option than your full-size bathroom bath at childrens bath time.

A surprising amount of water can be wasted during the simple act of brushing the teeth. You should teach your children to turn off the tap during brushing of the teeth and only use a small cup of water for gargling.

In order to help control the cost of your utility bills, the kids need to be involved in working towards efficiency. It is always helpful when a child becomes responsible at an early age, as he or she will carry this teaching with them to adulthood. Parents should also realize that maintaining a household is basically a team effort and all of the family members should play their part.
