Marketing in the real world and on the web are two completely different things. Following is advice you can use to tweak your internet marketing campaigns.

1. Update Your Site often - Not only does this encourage people to return to your site, but search engine spiders as well. Frequently updated sites also tend to have better search engine rankings than those that sit static with few updates.

2. New Customers vs Old Customers – Many sites focus all there marketing efforts on getting new clients. While this is natural, it should not be done to the exclusion of old customers. Drip market on old customers by sending them discount and sale offers.

3. SEO Dead Words – When pursuing a search engine optimization campaign, it is important to focus on relevant keywords. That being said, keep in mind there are words that do not count. These words are fillers such as “the”, “a” and so on.

4. Keyword Research and Tails - When conducting keyword research, people often mistakenly focus on two word phrases. You should look for the tail phrases, which are three to four words. There is less competion for rankings, but still plenty of traffic.

5. The Boring Site Map – Site maps may seem like a boring, unnecessary page of your site. In truth, they are critical. The site map is your safety page if you are doing search engine optimization. It is the page where search engine spiders can find everything.

6. Timing SEO - Un undiscussed factor in obtaining rankings through SEO is timing. New sites don't get ranked by Yahoo and Google. Your first step when launching a site is to get it published and submitted as fast as humanly possible.

7. Your Business Domain Name – Using your business name as your domain is a no brainer for most people. Just make sure it is easy to remember and type in. Avoid using it if you have multiple words that end and start with the same letter.

8. The Holy Grail of Type in Traffic – Regardless of the type of site you have, your ultimate goal is to get type in traffic. This occurs when a person types in your domain name instead of using a search engine. Amazon.com gets lots of type in traffic.

9. AOL vs Google - Is AOL or Google a better marketing forum for you? Well, it is a trick question. Google provides many of the search results for AOL. Focus on Google and you will appear on AOL.

10. MSN vs Google Search Engines - When marketing, you need to know which search engines to focus on. Google has the advantage of controlling the most traffic, but rankings come slowly. MSN will rank sites quickly, but has little traffic.

Advice is one of those dime a dozen things. Everyone has it to give and they often won’t shut up about it. I am probably no different, but I can say the above has helped me make money on the net.
