Tired of throwing money at oil companies and your local utility? You can fight back by eliminating the energy waste in your life. Consider the following: 1. If you have large sliding glass doors, place something dark under them during winter months. You will be surprised how much heat can be generated from the sun beating on them. 2. If you are going to be out of your home office for more than 20 minutes, turn off all the electrical accessories. Computers, stereos and the like suck up energy if you just leave them on. 3. Check the Pressure in Your Tires – Underinflated tires can reduce gas mileage by 3 to 5 percent and wear out the tires. Make sure to maintain pressures at the top end of the suggested psi of the tire. 4. Programmable Thermostats Save Money – Heating your home can be expensive. Programmable thermostats let you save money by setting the times when heating should occur and when it should not such as when you are at work. 5. Insulate Your Hot Water Heater – Your hot water heater can be a huge waste of money. The heat escapes through the walls of the heater. Buy one of the water heater insulation wraps to save money. 6. Heating Two Story Homes – Heat moves up, so you can manipulate it with your multi-level home. Close all vents other than on the lowest floor. Heat will migrate up and you will spend less. 7. The Electrical Grid – When it comes to renewable energy, you will quickly hear the term electrical grid. It refers the platform maintained by utilities across the country. With solar, you can feed energy into the grid when not using it. 8. Solar power not only saves you money, but helps stop global warming. 9. Thermostat Control – Your thermostat is the method to control much of your home energy costs. Turning it down a measly three degrees can cut your energy bill by 10 percent. 10. Setting Tire Air Pressure – When filing your tires, use the guideline on the tire, not in the owners manual. Tires perform differently, so they are a better source for air pressure. None of these changes will save you big bucks in the next month. Over time, however, they can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings. Every incremental change saves you money each and every month.
