Depression is often just disregarded as something that only affects a certain type of person or people, weak winded, addicts, the list goes on. In truth though if you or even anyone that you do or have cared about has been affected by it, you will know it to be very serious. Depression can be a lot more than just feeling blue or being down in the dumps, It is an actual medical condition as is diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure. It is something that, if not treated, can have control over your physical health, your thoughts, feelings, and your behavior.

The symptoms of depression are not limited to negative moods or thoughts but also to changes in your body's functions which can include irregular sleeping and eating, decrease libido, and crying spells. If not treated it has been known to increase the risk of asthma, coronary heart disease and even HIV. Every single person is at risk, and if it's not treated it can have a major impact on your emotions and feelings.

According to many studies, depression is much more common in women than in men, but the reason for this, still remains unclear. Besides the fact that woman generally do suffer more often than men, women can tend to think they can work through the depression on their own. Sometimes this can work, but ultimately it comes down to the cause of the depression in the first place. Depression is an illness that can be successfully treated in more than eighty percent of the people who have it. It is unfortunate that most people with a depressive illness do not seek help, as sometimes even just talking about it can result in the symptoms reducing.
