Digital cameras are dropping in price and everyone wants one. As early as five years ago the prices were prohibitive for even a basic model. If you wanted more options, you'd pay even more. These days, even the upgraded models are affordable. Digital photography is so easy and great, that it's the only way to go!

Before you buy a new camera, think about some of the features. Most people in the market for a digital camera have at least one computer at home. It isn't a necessity, as many of the camera companies also sell special printers that interface with the camera. In that situation you can print your pictures without using a separate computer. If you have a computer, then you're in luck. You can load the pictures from the camera to your PC and manipulate them with the aid of photo software. When they look like you want them to, then upload them to a picture sharing program or website and share them with family and friends. All of you will have the option of printing the pictures as well.

There are several specifications that can make each digital camera unique or better than another. The first factor to look at is the mega-pixels. Basically the mega-pixels are the number of pixels that each camera can take at its highest resolution. You can get anything from 2.0 mega- pixels to 12.0 mega-pixels. Typically anything higher than 4.0 mega-pixels is unnecessary for the average consumer. You would only need such a high resolution if you were planning on blowing up your pictures to a large size. Typically 3.0 mega-pixels to 4.0 mega-pixels is ideal. Your pictures will be extremely clear and print out perfectly.

Another factor you should consider is the type of zoom. Digital zoom is another property of digital cameras. Digital zoom is not always the best zoom, and pictures can often turn out rather grainy. The better choice is optical zoom. Optical zoom gives excellent results, but costs a bit more as well. If you do not intend to use the zoom function often you probably do not want to worry about too high of an optical zoom factor since it can get quite expensive.

You may want to purchase extra memory by getting a memory card. Often the internal memory isn't enough, especially if you're taking a trip. Without the card, you may end up with only 30 pictures or so. Memory cards aren't prohibitive in cost, and with it you will be able to store hundreds of pictures.

Your digital camera should come with software to help you edit and manipulate your pictures. Usually this software is fairly basic, but you can do some cool functions such as changing a color photo to black and white or sepia tones. With more sophisticated software you can even edit objects and people out of your pictures.
