Increase Strength and Stamina Using D-Ribose

D-Ribose (often just called ribose) is found in every cell of the body as a natural simple sugar and is essential for life. Its role is to manufacture energy for muscles and other tissues and is considered important for active people. Ribose has a taste and also appears like powdered sugar. Ribose is on a rapid increase as a sports supplement due to the ever growing belief that is increases power, strength and stamina and reduces muscle fatigue.

The body absorbs and converts ribose into body cells with great expediency which is one of its greatest benefits. From sugars, the body naturally manufactures ribose but the bodies natural process is quite slow when we are actively participating in strenuous and intense exercise. In these instances the production rate of ribose can not keep up due the body using up the stores of energy at a greatly accelerated rate. Therefore the on set of muscle fatigue also comes at a highly accelerated rate. Some of the soreness and weariness after intense exercise can be attributed to this fact.

Recovering energy molecules is sped up, and fatigue and soreness are decreased, according to Studies by Burke 1999 on D-Ribose. Dosing with Ribose prior to and after strenuous physical exertion gives muscles top quality fuel that is made readily available to the muscular system. Ribose enhances the reaction that leads to muscule and cell repair, rebuilding and regeneration.

D-Ribose is deemed highly beneficial prior to, during and at the completion of vigorous exercise under anaerobic conditions, such as sprint speed work and resistence exercises. The recooperation of the fundemental muscle building blocks are promoted by ribose. If the cells building blocks aren't maintained they are washed from the cell and head to the blood stream.

A study conducted in 2001 by Antonio, Falk and Van Gammeren, monitored the performance of 20 male body builders over a four weeks. The men were separated into 2 equal random groups. Ribose was given before and after strenuous physical weight sessions to one group and the other test group were administered a placebo. The end results demonstrated that the users of ribose displayed a significant increase in the amount of repetitions of bench presses to muscle failure and fatigue accompanied by an increase in optimum strength.

Advocates for Ribose are in agreeance that the amount taken should not exceed the 10g mark. The most common suggestion lean toward a 5g hit before a workout and a repeat dose straight after a workout. Another option goining support as well is to divide the 10g dose into 3 lots and administer a dose in the middle of a workout session. This is thought to enhance performance especially when the workout is planned over a lenghty period of time.

Ribose needs to be taken with some precautions when it comes to dosage. Taking 10g or more on an empty stomach may lead to temporary lightheadedness. It is recommended that single doses of Ribose should be 5g or less and taken with food, sports drinks or a juice drink. It should not be taken by nursing mothers or pregnant women.

Ribose is also considered to have wonderful benefits for the heart. Ever wondered when your heart gets to recover from that constant beating? Many people think that their heart gets a break and rests when they are asleep, but the body's need for the supply of oxygen never halts, so sleep time is not rest time for the heart. In fact, the heart gets its rest periods in between beats! The muscles of the heart are filled with oxygen-rich and energy-laden blood, which restores the cells between heartbeats so that they are primed to contract and expand upon demand the very next beat! Ribose plays a key role here.

Our body synthesizes many chemicals called "nucleotides" for the manufacture of chemical energy and energy transporters. When under physical duress, intense exercise, or recooperating from heart surgery, heart attack or organ transplant surgery, the muscular systems in the body (including the heart) will have less amounts of nucleotides. The human body passes through steps to take the food that we have eaten and the air we breathe in and turns it into energy for our body cells. The body's primary energy-carrying molecule, adenosine triphosphate or ATP is synthesized via a number of chemical reactions within the body. Ribose forms part of the backbone of ATP, therefore assisting muscle repair, development and recovery.
