Perhaps the most significant change in higher education in the United States over the past several years has been the rapid growth in online education programs offered by major colleges and universities. The number of schools offering these programs has been steadily increasing over the past 5 years and the trend shows no signs of changing anytime soon. One of the biggest advantages to online education is the huge advantages it presents to working adults. Previously working adults found it difficult to manage a full time job, often a family and going to classes in the evening. Online education has allowed working adults the opportunity to further their education while at the same time giving the student time to still hold down a job and manage a family. One of the most important items to look for when considering an online education is accreditation. Many of the online programs are offered by accredited universities but some are not so make sure you do your home work regarding accreditation. The number of hours required to complete a degree program online varies from college to college but should not be significantly different than if you attended classes on campus. Virtually all of the online programs allow you to interact with the real instructor and school. You also have access to the facilities of the actual campus if it is located in your geographical region. Many of the online colleges and universities are now offering student the opportunity to obtain a master's degree or even in many cases, a doctorate degree. The gap between the type of educational experience you get from a campus school and that which you receive online has greatly narrowed. Your lifetime earning power has never been more closely related to your educational level than it is in the early 21st century. One of the first things employers look at when considering promotions or whom to hire for a skilled position is the educational level of the employee. A person with college degree will earn quite a bit more money over a working lifetime than will someone without a degree. One of the biggest cultural changes brought on by the increase in online education is the choices young adults now have when leaving high school. In ior years a student usually had a choice between attending college full time or going to work full time. Many young adults now are taking advantage f the best of both worlds by getting a start on their careers while at the same time taking online courses geared towards obtaining their degree. Young adults have responded very well to the enhanced educational opportunities offered by taking online classes. Online education has opened up an entirely new avenue of opportunities for those who feel they need to obtain more education in order to further their careers. It was often a choice of full time work or full time college. Online education has greatly enhanced the options for all potential students.
