Wherever roads have been widened or flyover passes have been built pedestrians’ safety and convenience has got a severe battering.

We have some beautifully planned intersections in the capital of India. It will not be an exaggeration to call Delhi the city of intersections, which are seamless, without any halt for the crisscrossing traffic.

Imagine you are speeding away at the main arterial road and at the intersection you negotiate a left turn up a flyover and swerve right down to the road you would have waited to take had there been no flyover. Now you are actually flying at the intersections without stoppage time went into that. The seamless intersections followed up by flyovers have you on the go without halt.

The Golden Quadrilateral Express Highway Project is putting us on a new surface transit mode never observed in India. The road traffic and the road safety, needless to say, are taking a new look, for now it means dealing with high-speed traffic.

A toll road built by private builders in Delhi although proved to be an amazing time and effort-saving alternative, it turned into a killer passage before the road authority intervened to have it paved with speed breakers. Now that is a great put off. The traffic regulators should have intervened to have a check-punish system. You just cannot go on paving your roads with speed breakers and rubble strips which damage our vehicles seriously. One may have to go for several axle changes owing to this.

Looks like road authorities in India are gearing up to meet up with the change the landscape of the country are going about with up gradation of roads infrastructure. But on traffic regulations and pedestrian movement there is a lot to be desired. We have provided for the Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai traffic for the motor vehicles but what about pedestrians.

Wherever roads have been widened or flyover passes have been built pedestrians’ safety and convenience has got a severe battering. They have to walk long distances to cross roads and often at the risk while facing high-speed traffic. That’s not fair.
