The swimsuit contest has proven itself to be hugely successful in raising money or in promotional activities. The fact remains though, that there is a significant number of the population who would argue that they are nothing more than exploitation vehicles for women. The organizers of these contests counter claim that swimsuit contests provide judges the perfect opportunity to judge a person's physical fitness, their poise and their posture. The swimsuit contest is very much the American way of life; in fact many would argue that it is as wholesome as home made apple pie. It often forms part of a large beauty pageant where the judges will allocate set marks for this part of the contest. More than not though, the swimsuit contest will be a stand-alone contest where girls are judged only in their swimsuits and only on their physical appearance. There are many strong critics of the swimsuit contest, there always has been, and no doubt they will always remain. Their objection stems from the belief that these contests send out a completely wrong message to society. This is that beauty is the single most important quality that a girl can have. In a world where sex and beauty sells as never before, it is easy to see why the swimsuit contest has so many enemies. Eating and emotional disorders are just two of the many problems our young girls are facing often because of low self esteem. Perfect bodies and Hollywood good looks are the exception in our society and should not be used as a yardstick in determining one's self worth. Unfortunately a lot of controversy remains over the swimsuit contest particularly in our major pageants such as Miss America or Miss Universe. Interestingly the swimsuit contest now only contributes 15% to the contestant's score in Miss America. Talent and the private interview section of the contest now rates far more on the judge's scorecard. The swimsuit contest is in fact rated as second lowest to the onstage questions which are only considered to be worth 5% of the total score. Because the relevancy of swimsuit contests in major pageants has always been such an issue, a phone poll was conducted which should have been enough to silence the critics once and for all. An enormous 87% of people voted in favour of retaining the swimsuit contests. There are many reasons why girls choose to enter a swimsuit contest. The prize money may be secondary to the real reason, which is an opportunity to gain public exposure and hopefully launch a professional modelling career. Many international super models gained experience and exposure from swimsuit contests. The swimsuit contest has been around for close to a century now, and even though it is now generally accepted in Western countries it still receives much criticism. Originally it was totally forbidden by the middle class who saw it as a manifestation of low moral values. Its acceptance was however enhanced greatly during the Second World War, when beauty queens were recruited to entertain the troops and to promote the sale of American bonds.
