The Art of Selecting Food for Parties

The focal point of a party is food. Even the most boring event can be turned into a roaring success with fantastic food. All you need to do is choose the correct dishes and you will have a party that is the highlight of your local social scene and the talk of the town.

The first thing to do is select a theme for your party, which can be as simple as a superhero theme for a child's birthday party or a sophisticated theme for an elegant evening party. If you decide on the theme in accordance with the occasion you will have no difficulty in choosing the menu. Of course, the theme of the party must cater to the overall feel for the party. You must determine whether you want a fun and casual party or a high culture and elegant theme.

Next step is to decide on the style and time of day. The food you serve will be according to the time. People have certain expectations associated with certain times. For instance, they would expect a sort of brunch at eleven. You cannot host a dinner party at four o'clock in the afternoon or a tea party at ten o'clock in the morning. If you invite people at five o'clock in the evening they will expect a cocktail party with snacks and mixed drinks.

The food and menu set the real tone of the party. After you're through with the initial planning the next task is to select the menu. Menu entirely depends upon the theme of the party. One possibly cannot serve snails and lobsters in children's party, whereas serving cheese sandwiches and noodles at adult party might not be a good idea. Choosing the best menu is the sure shot recipe for success of your party.

If you are planning a party in honor of someone—such as a birthday, shower, or anniversary party—consider choosing their favorite foods for the menu. Since the party is being held in their honor, the prestigious guest should be accommodated for in each manner. Choose that individual’s signature beverage for the drink of choice and include his or her favorite foods or desserts.

You should also consider items that can be messy to consume, and avoid them, especially for a cocktail event or one with only snacks. It's best to choose options that can be eaten cleanly with one hand in a single bite. Avoid things like buffalo wings that can be eaten in a single bite, but are simply too messy to consume. Instead choose mini quiche, bite sized baked goods, meat or cheese on crackers, or small sandwiches for your party fare.

You can be really creative when it comes to choosing your dessert. The trend, these days, is to have a variety of desserts instead of a single, main attraction. Some brides prefer to have small wedding cakes for each guest instead of the large traditional cake.

Whatever the style of your party, ensuring the food is successful will ensure the party’s success. Individuals may not remember the color linens you used or the purpose of the party, but are certain to recall those tasty cheesecake bites, a scrumptious roast, or smooth cocktail.
