You might be tempted to believe that you need not invest too much thought into buying a watch, right? Honestly, find one that you can afford that looks great and you are done. Unfortunately, like any purchase, doing your homework is essential to getting the best deal and finding the watch that is perfect for your lifestyle and wardrobe. So before rushing headlong into a purchasing decision that you will regret later, here are some things to keep in mind when thinking about buying a watch.

You need to think about what attributes you want the watch to have. Do just want your new watch to give you the time of day, but what other qualities do you want it to have? How much time precision do you want the watch to contain? Minutes or milliseconds? Do you wish to have the watch remain in your family? These are just the types of issues you need to consider to find the watch of your dreams.

Price is always a consideration so you better know how much you are prepared to spend before entering into the jewelry store. It is before to decide upon a price range because if you find something that is a little more expensive than your set price, you want some room with which to make your decision.

What kind of situations will your watch need to survive? Do you plan on wearing it while you are jogging or only on special occasions? Does your watch need to be tough so that it can withstand the tasks of your job?

Consider the type of service plan your watch will need. Mechanical watches usually need to be serviced once every three years. Battery operated (quartz) watches are normally serviced when it is time to change the battery.

What material are you looking for? There are a wide range of choices available. Plastic, resin, gold-plated, and stainless steel are just a few of the options. Again, you will want to consider lifestyle when thinking about the material. Also, if you are thinking about gold plating, know that price depends upon the thickness and it is measured in microns.

Finally, you should consider the level of water resistant protection you will need for the watch. If you only need the watch to continue functioning properly through rain and some occasional wet spots, then a water resistant rating of 3 ATM (30 meters or approximately 100 feet) will suffice. For anything other than living under water or some professional diving, a rating of 5 ATM (50 meters or roughly 165 feet should be fine for occasional swimming and things like that.

As you can see from these considerations, buying a watch requires research that needs to be made before you go to the jewlery store. In summary you need to figure out where and why you will wear the watch plus how much your budget will allow for the watch. This way you improve your chances of finding the watch that has always been at the top of your wish list.
