The Intermountain west consists of the states Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Although all of these states are well known for for their striking beauty there are a lot of aspects of this area that a lot of people do not often tour but are warrant a visit. If you have the desire and inclination then add some of these to your list of activities when you next visit this region.

1. Visit the Hot Pools- This geological area has a great deal of thermal activity which has resulted in a a lot of mineral hot pools in these states. These pools vary greatly in how much they have been developed and there is a place to fit all types of persuasions. For those that are more outdoorsy then White Sulfur Springs Hotel has the best pool and motel for you. Those that like more of a resort feel, check out some of the ones that Colorado has to offer.

2. Search for Petraglyphs- The ancient Indians of the Mountain west were very artistic, and a great deal of there 4000-year old art can still be seen today, chipped into rocks across the region. For those that just want a taste, Fremont State Park in Utah has a interesting trail and interpretive center, for those that enjoy walking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to stop for a visit.

3. Visit the Lesser Known National Parks- If you have not visited Arches, then certainly you should visit there first, but for those of you that have already done the most popular parks in the region you should think about stopping by the underestimated ones. All together, this region has over 50 National sites, and many of the state have exemplarystate park systems as well.

4. See the Small Town Museums (as well as the large ones)- A lot of the most interesting museums are those that are off the beaten path, like the city museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local citizenry gathered memorabilia from their town spanning a century and a half. Of course, some of the more famous museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum delves into western history for example Western Art or Natural History.

5. Go Skiing- Western summers are famous, but we also have the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying downhill skiing, you should consider x-country skiing. The Sun Valley of Idaho has wonderful trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.

6. Explore a Mountain Lake during the beautiful summer weather– The mountains of the intermountain west are full of small and secluded lakes. A lot of these are popular but a few of the most exquiste are off the beaten track and frequently require a difficult or even overnight backpack to get to. One of our favorite picks is Fremont Lake in the Wind River Mountains. This secluded alpine lake is surrounded by giant cliffs and beautifully carved mountains that were created by glaciers. The Wind River mnts. are reknow for backpacking and camping opportunities. Another fantastic place to visit in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome lake located near the Cirque of the Towers in the southern half of the Wind River Mountains.

As you can tell, there are a number of things that you can do in the mountain west, instead of the boringgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only be exciting and fun but provide you with many great pictures for years to come.
