The Rocky mountain west consists of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these states are well known for for their striking beauty there are a large number of aspects of this region that most people do not often tour but are definitely worthy of attention. If you have the time and inclination then make a point of visiting at least one of these attractions on your next trip.

1. Visit the Hot Springs- This geographic area has a great deal of thermal activity which has resulted in a a good number of mineral hot pools in this region. These pools vary immensely in how much they have been developed and there is a spring to match all types of tastes. For those that are like simplicity then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the perfect place for you. Those that like more of a resort feel, check out some of the ones that Colorado has to offer.

2. Hunt for Rock Art- The ancient Indians of the Intermountain west were very artistic, and a a lot of there 4000-year old art can still be seen today, chipped into rocks across the region. For those that just want a taste, Fremont State Park in Utah has a rewarding trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a delightful place to stop for a visit.

3. Visit the Lesser Known National Recreation Areas- If you have not been to Bryce Canyon, then certainly you should visit there first, but for people who have experienced the main circuit of parks in the west you could think about visiting the underestimated ones. Cumulatively, these states have over 53 National sites, and many of the state have excellentstate park systems as well.

4. See the Local Museums (as well as the more famous ones)- A lot of the most interesting museums are those that are in the middle of nowhere, like the city museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered paraphernalia from their area spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the more famous museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. This museum has five separate galleries which cover some aspect of the west such as Western Art or Modern Western Art.

5. Go Skiing- The West is famous for its sunny weather, but we also have some of the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you might try x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has wonderful trails another great option the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Montana.

6. Visit anAlpine Lake during the beautiful summer weather– The mountain ranges of the intermountain west are full of glacial blue alpine lakes. Most of them are well known but a number of the most exquiste are off the main tourist track and sometimes require a difficult or even overnight backpack to reach. One of our favorite picks is Fremont Lake in the Wind Rivers. This lake is surrounded by giant cliffs and jagged mountain peaks that were formed by glacier ice. The Wind River mountains are a popular destination during the summer months for fishing and hiking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is known as Lonsome Lake and is found in the Cirque of the Towers region in the southern part of the Wind Rivers.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of things that you could do in the mountain west, instead of the oldgroup tour. Any of the above ideas will not only take you to the heart of the true West but will provide you with many great pictures for years to come.
